get up roma - giuvlipenGet up roma
In the Romanian performance Giuvlipen Theatre Company, humor becomes a tool of resistance and a platform for self-expression, cultural pride, and political commentary. It is a celebration of the diversity of identities, questioning the ruling order, and a call to rethink who gets to tell the joke and who has been the target of jokes for too long. This kind of humor is not for the weak. The experienced audience knows that this Romanian group has never been known for being subtle or compromising. Why would their stand-up night be any different? The jokes hit hard, they offend, but they also liberate, while helping you rise above. Come and experience it with us!
"You’d think thousands are arriving everyday. Meanwhile migrants are like: ‘’Relax, babe, we are trying to get to Germany.’’
Hungary is not a destination. It’s a dramatic layover.
Well, Romania is not better, we just don’t have money for a fence."

Background
The Stand Up Roma (SUR) project is an international initiative empowering young artists to create deeply personal stand-up comedy shows that explore cultural identity and challenge social stereotypes. To prepare for the stage, the participants underwent intensive international training that successfully blended traditional Commedia dell’Arte techniques with modern stand-up comedy. This creative journey resulted in three main productions: the Hungarian performance "Who Laughs Last / Ki nevet a végén?", the Italian production "Uncertain Identities / Identità Incerte", and the Romanian partner Giuvlipen's show "Get Up Roma, Stand Up".
All of these unique performances came together and were featured at the prestigious Roma Heroes International Theater Festival in Budapest, where they debuted in a vibrant, highly interactive format to celebrate authentic voices and freedom of expression.
