gypsy solitude - kristóf horváth

gypsy solitude

CIgyar Magány

Kristóf Horváth, known to many as “Actor Bob,” explores the social and personal aspects of shame in his stand-up performance. It is both entertaining and deeply confrontational: using humor and irony, he calls out typical situations that reveal the insecurities and fears behind social prejudices. A “Gypsy Window-Giraffe”—an easily understandable dictionary for coexistence, where the Roma perspective is not the goal, but a tool for a shared journey of self-discovery.

"At least I tried, didn’t I?

But at least it was better than before, wasn’t it?

I was afraid of this. That’s the beauty of the stage: the risk is real.

Sometimes the miracle simply doesn’t happen.

But failure too… that’s also good to watch, right?"

Background

This performance was created as part of the Stand Up Roma open call, a joint project by the Independent Theater Hungary and the Trafó House of Contemporary Arts. The aim of the program was to support new performing arts productions in which Roma or interethnic artists and artistic groups address issues of Roma self-representation, Roma perspectives, and storytelling from a Roma viewpoint.

The open call offered the stand-up format as a starting point, which creators were free to fill with their own content, adapt, or even reinterpret. The initiative was equally open to various forms of contemporary theater and performance, including post-dramatic, musical, and movement-based approaches.

The three performances—Gypsy Solitude, Evilface, and Gypsy, but Decent—have been in the repertoire of both the Independent Theater Hungary and the Trafó House of Contemporary Arts since 2025, and have also been presented at several Hungarian professional events and festivals, including the 8th International Roma Heroes Theater Festival.

Reviews

"... Gypsy Solitude—aside from the moments that are intentionally uncomfortable, or perhaps precisely because of them—is exactly what I think good stand-up should be. It confronts and provokes, but it centers on his own personal story."
